Young Adults & Exective Committee

This weekend Young Adults will hold a Cornerstone Conference in San Francisco; Affirmation's Executive Committee with meet concurrently. In the interests of creating a safe space, Cornerstone attendance is limited to persons aged 18-30. While registration is offically closed, contact YA Director Robert Moore. The Executive Committee meeting is open to all, but does have a very full agenda and is only as exciting as any three-day business meeting.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Federal Domestic Partner Benefits

The Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act of 2009 (good summary here) is about to get a hearing in the House of Representatives. The bill would extent full benefits to federal employees and the domestic partners.

Please contact your Senators and Representative and tell them how you want them to vote on this issue.

Send an Affirmation member to Antarctica!

DC Chapter member Andrew Evans is competing to be the official blogger for a Quark Expeditions trip in February 2010. He'll need thousands of votes, and polling closes on 30 September. Please help him out!

On Thursday 9 July, a gay couple was arrested for kissing in the plaza by the reflecting pool east of the Salt Lake Temple. On the following Sunday, around 100 people held a kiss-in around Temple Square. Among the participants was 2009 Conference Director David Nielson.

Brief recap: LDS Church security told the arrestees that public displays of affection are not allowed on Temple Square and adjacent Church property. Couples married in the Salt Lake Temple normally have photographs taken on the front steps of the temple and around the reflecting pool, so a question arises about how the no public displays of affection policy is fairly enforced.

Another kiss-in is scheduled for this Sunday, 19 July between 12-12:30 pm.
